The project
S Design System is a crucial, strategic tool and a way of working for building S Group websites and applications. It delivers a centralised solution to manage the multiple brands of S Group online and beyond. It ensures a unified way of accomplishing accessibility in the digital products and makes the collaboration between designers and developers more efficient and effective.

My role
I worked as part of a dedicated design system team consisting of designers and developers, serving the needs of a large and diverse group of different brands and digital services in the S Group organisation.

  • Craft: I helped to create a foundation for the system including design tokens, components and documentation. Based on the multi-brand architecture we implemented for both design and development, we adapted multiple brands to the system, based on the collaborative knowledge from product teams.
  • Guidance & Sparring: together with my team, I supported the product teams in the design system adaptation phase, fostering smooth collaboration over team boundaries.
  • Processes & Alignment: our team developed efficient processes, such as a contribution model and a communication plan, for enhanced team collaboration.
  • Strategy & Prioritization: we designed a business strategy plan for the product and prioritised our work based on an estimate model and roadmaps.

Why It Matters
The aim of this organization-wide design system is to ensure a unified way of accomplishing accessibility in the organisation’s digital products for their end-users, while making the collaboration between designers and developers more efficient and effective. By bridging the gap between brand identity, accessibility, and technology, these strategic aspects can elevate the S Group digital services to a higher level in quality and effectiveness, in both business and user experience.

Recognition
The S Design System was awarded with Honorable mention in Best Design System category, Grand One 2023.

The client
S Group is a customer-owned Finnish network of companies in the retail and service sectors, with more than 1,900 outlets in Finland. The group has more than 40,000 employees and is the largest private employer in Finland, with locations across the country, from Hanko to Inari.
